چکیده

William K. George Turbulence Research Laboratory, State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York mlt is argued that the most important test of the understanding of any experiment is whether or not the results are consistent with the equations and boundary conditions believed to govern the flow. If they are not, then either the measurements are incorrect, the equations or boundary condmons are wrong, or the experiment performed was not the one believed to have been done. It is suggested that many apparently contradictory experimental results are, in fact, the result of the latter and have not been recognized as such because of a failure to apply the governing equations to the data The arguments are supported by examples from turbulent shear flow experiments.

ACTA UNIVERSITATIS APULENSIS No 9/2005 CALCULATION OF THE CRITICAL STOKES NUMBER FOR WIDE-STREAM IMPACTION OF POTENTIAL FLOW OVER SYMMETRIC ARC-NOSED COLLECTORS

The wide-stream impaction on a class of semi-infinite twodimensional symmetric bodies having flat or circular-arc noses placed in a uniform potential flow of aerosols is investigated. The governing Stokes equations of motion are nonlinear differential equations involving a parameter called the Stokes number. The study calculates analytically the critical value of the Stokes number on the centre...

The Monte Carlo Method

The Monte Carlo method is often referred to as a ‘computer experiment’. One might think of this as a way of conveying the fact that the output of simulations is not an equation, as in conventional theory. Instead, numbers appear on the computer screen in somewhat the same way that numbers appear on a measuring device in the laboratory. Thus there is the implication that somehow simulations are ...

A New Approach for Solving Heat and Mass Transfer Equations of Viscoelastic Nanofluids using Artificial Optimization Method

The behavior of many types of fluids can be simulated using differential equations. There are many approaches to solve differential equations, including analytical and numerical methods. However, solving an ill-posed high-order differential equation is still a major challenge. Generally, the governing differential equations of a viscoelastic nanofluid are ill-posed; hence, their solution is a c...

Analytical and Numerical Study on the Buckling of Homogeneous Beams Coated by a Functionally Graded Porous Layer with Different Boundary Conditions

In this paper, static buckling of homogeneous beams coated by a functionally graded porous layer with different boundary conditions is investigated based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The principle of virtual work has been used to obtain the governing equations. Two different methods, namely analyticalsolution and numerical solution are used to solve the governing equations and extract the buc...
